Meta-Meth

Being drawn to stories of hardship and resilience — maybe we should think BEYOND this. Think beyond the hardships.

Some contend that we are the author of our stories, that we (or perhaps even the “collective unconscious”) compose the events — that it’s like enjoying tragic shows and horror movies. If we are the authors of our stories, then why not write or rewrite the story so there doesn’t have to be suffering?

It’s like sabotaging yourself just so you can try to climb out of the hole again. Like purposely doing meth even though you’re fine and you know it will ruin you, and you do it just to “experience the hardships” (as opposed to being in a difficult situation and using meth to cope). It destroys your health, but hey, there’s the awesome highs you experience! And then, you can learn to stop doing meth and recover (or as much as you can recover depending on how much your health might already be destroyed) and can appreciate how much you’ve grown or whatever, and appreciate not being on meth after seeing how much it ruined your life. When you could have just not done meth in the first place.

The supposed “necessity” of suffering– Just don’t do it. It’s like hurting oneself just so one can heal and feel the healing. But you were healthy to begin with! Stop hurting yourself!

Why shouldn’t we imagine beyond the traditional narratives? It’s time to rethink the hardship porn.
