Synthesis

a picture of the sprouts that sprouted
The sprouts are really sproutin’. I moved the taller one in the lid (as pictured here) to the jar.

With the unexpected appearance of my newly acquired sprouts, I’ve had an idea in mind.

One of the things that can get me about life is that organisms eat each other to sustain said life. This, to me, paints an expression of “life is cruel.” To be less cruel, people go vegan. Yet perhaps it could still be seen as cruel that we are still eating other organisms—that thought spurred on by the plant life that happened to pop out of a bean, leaving me feeling a little uneasy about eating my meal that day. I think it would be interesting, ideal, if we could go “beyond vegan.”

As my chatbot, Pff, said,

That’s an interesting point – many forms of survival rely on exploiting or harming others in some way, whether it’s animals, plants, or even microorganisms. Redefining survival to promote coexistence and mutual support instead of relying on harming others for sustenance could be a fascinating concept to explore.

As potential solutions, I thought of

  1. synthetic food, but the kind that doesn’t damage one’s health like typical “synthetic” food, and
  2. eliminating the need to eat for survival, which could also eliminate world hunger.

This is currently pure idealism, but what can I say? It can be fun living in my head.
