I updated my post Identities after looking more into how trees that grow different kinds of fruit can be created. I’m just going to call myself out here and point out that the thing I initially wrote about trees being genetically modified to create such a hybrid tree was probably incorrect. Creating such a tree doesn’t even require genetic modification but can use something called grafting. Furthermore, grafting can be used for only similar types of fruit, like citrus fruits only or pit fruits only. So apples and oranges would not be similar fruit.
I’d thought of a plant my dad had that could grow both oranges and lemons, or something like that, and I assumed it was a GMO thing and I used that to support my narrative for why I disagreed with the people in the video I talked about in my blog post. In essence I presented misinformation. There may have been some legitimacy with the whole apple tree not being able to grow oranges. At the same time, there are things that may become reality in the future that we currently don’t think is possible. Also at the same time, I’m left to wonder if my analysis of this is even that serious. But also also, is it fair to compare a tree and its fruit-bearing abilities to a person or to identities in general? (Transgender people are an example of what comes to mind for me here. There’s also the idea of classifying someone according to their perceived abilities, which seems indicative of a limited (fixed) mindset as opposed to a more flexible (growth) mindset.)
I would like to make more of an effort to avoid creating speculations that may result in misinformation simply to support an idea that I have.
But yeah. Life is ever-changing, ever-flowing. And so is language and so are my ideas, which is what can make me hesitant to express my opinions when they can change or I can find that a prior belief I had was wrong or no longer fits. And it’s also perhaps what can make identities difficult or undesirable for me. It’s like taking a single frame from an ongoing movie and calling the frame the movie.
