Models

Models can be made to fit and explain the data. Data from research can be shaped and interpreted to say what one wants it to say. Likewise, people can make their own models to explain life, to fit their reality. The data can be interpreted to say what they want it to say.

Some people want to transcend this. They may see it as an illusion. Some people advocate embracing this. They encourage making your own meaning from the data. Some people don’t even realize they’re making models. They think what they think is beyond mere interpretation; perhaps they think it is 100 percent objective truth, the end all be all.

Sometimes people don’t realize there’s a choice. And sometimes they do, but for any number of reasons, they choose to stick with a particular choice even if it’s detrimental. Perhaps they don’t always see it as detrimental. Perhaps they see it as truth.

A lot of convincing oneself. A lot of placebo effect. A lot of fitting a model to the data, and even then a lot of the data might be ignored—a lot of cherry picking.
