What would it be like to be a robot? Perhaps simpler because not only do robots lack those complicated things called “emotions,” but they’re programmed, which means a relief from choices.
But then humans are programmed too. Some people think TV can program you (“That’s why they’re called ‘programs'” said one guy in the psych ward.) but we’re already born programmed: genes, DNA. The difference is that as humans, we can question our programming, and to some extent, we can choose to go against it.
Or so we think. Dun Dun DUNNNN. So at least there’s the perception of choice, so many choices. And it can be overwhelming, and it can lead to anxiety and existential crises and all that junk. Too much freedom. And at the same time, considering our “programming,” not enough, because some (a lot?) of it, it seems we can do nothing about.
And for me, a desire to self-destruct, though I don’t think robots have desires. Though thinking about it on a biological level, perhaps too desires are a kind of programming. People can be influenced by their environments as well, and even genes can be switched on and off due to environmental and chemical factors.
It’s all so very interesting. It’s all so very complex. Being human is just… a lot.
Or so it seems.
